Sources & Methodology

How CountryStats collects, organizes and presents data.

This page explains the types of sources we use, how data is structured, how live estimates are calculated, and how CountryStats approaches updates and transparency.

Our Source Approach

Recognized data sources first.

CountryStats aims to use publicly available data from recognized international organizations, official statistical agencies, government sources and other reputable providers.

When multiple sources are available, we aim to favor the most recent, clearly defined and internationally comparable dataset that is suitable for the page or indicator being presented.

◎

International Organizations

Global institutions that publish cross-country economic, demographic, health, trade and development data.

▦

Official Statistics

National statistical offices, public agencies and official databases where country-level data is available.

↗

Specialized Data Providers

Recognized organizations that publish topic-specific datasets for energy, defense, trade and other indicators.

Examples of Sources

Organizations referenced across CountryStats.

World Bank — development, population and economic indicators
United Nations — demographic and international statistics

Source availability varies by topic.

Not every indicator uses every organization listed above. The relevant source or source group may differ depending on the statistic, country, year and dataset.

Methodology

From published data to clear statistics.

01
Collect Identify suitable published datasets from recognized and relevant sources.
02
Review Check definitions, units, time periods and country coverage before presenting the data.
03
Standardize Organize country names, values, rankings, units and years into a consistent format.
04
Present Display the information through clear pages, rankings, summaries, tables and live indicators.
05
Update Review and refresh pages when newer or more appropriate datasets become available.
Live Statistics

How real-time counters work.

Many global statistics are published annually, monthly or daily rather than second by second. For this reason, some CountryStats live counters are modeled estimates based on published totals and the amount of time that has passed.

A live value may therefore increase or decrease continuously on screen even though the underlying official dataset is not itself published in real time.

Important:

Live counters should be treated as estimates for informational purposes, not as exact official second-by-second measurements.

Data Standards

What we aim for when presenting statistics.

Clear definitions

Units, years and indicator meanings should be presented as clearly as possible.

Comparable data

Where possible, we favor datasets that allow meaningful comparison across countries.

Transparent estimates

Modeled live values are distinguished from directly published statistics.

Corrections & Updates

Data can change.

Statistical databases are revised over time, and countries or organizations may update historical values, definitions or estimates. CountryStats may therefore revise a page when updated source data becomes available.
