Population by Country 2026: Key Findings

The world’s population is projected at approximately 8.30 billion people in 2026, an increase of about 69 million people compared with 2025. Global population growth continues, although the annual growth rate has slowed to around 0.84%.

India is the most populous country in the world in 2026, with an estimated population of 1.477 billion, representing about 17.8% of the global population. China ranks second with around 1.413 billion people, or approximately 17% of the world total. Together, India and China account for more than one-third of the world's population.

The United States remains the third-most populous country with about 349 million people, followed by Indonesia, Pakistan, and Nigeria. Pakistan is estimated to have more than 259 million people in 2026, making it the fifth-largest population in the world.

Population trends vary significantly between countries. Several large developing countries continue to experience relatively rapid population growth, while some major economies—including China, Russia, and Japan—are experiencing population decline. This difference is gradually reshaping the global distribution of population.

Top 10 Most Populous Countries in 2026

More than half of the world's population lives in just ten countries. India and China alone contain roughly 35% of the global population.

Population by Continent

Population is distributed very unevenly across the world. Asia is by far the most populated region, containing about 58.6% of the global population , while Africa accounts for approximately 19.1%. Africa is also growing significantly faster than Asia and Europe.

How the World Population Is Changing

The global population has grown dramatically over the past several decades, but the pace of growth is gradually slowing.

2000 6.17 Billion
2026 8.30 Billion
2050 Projection 9.66 Billion

Yearly growth

The United Nations expects future population growth to become increasingly concentrated in countries with younger populations, particularly in parts of Africa and Asia. At the same time, a growing number of countries are experiencing low fertility, ageing populations, or population decline. Based on the projections shown here, global population growth continues to slow, with the population reaching approximately 10.29 billion around 2084 before gradually declining to about 10.18 billion by 2100.

Understanding the Population Data

01 Population

Population refers to the estimated number of people living in a country or territory. The 2026 figures represent population estimates or projections rather than a real-time census count.

02 Yearly Change

Yearly Change shows the percentage increase or decrease in population compared with the previous year.

A positive value indicates population growth, while a negative value indicates population decline.

03 Net Change

Net Change represents the estimated number of people added to or removed from the population during the year.

04 Population Density

Population density measures the average number of people living per square kilometer of land area.

05 Migrants (Net)

Net migration represents the difference between the number of people entering and leaving a country.

A positive number means immigration exceeds emigration, while a negative number means more people are leaving than entering.

06 Fertility Rate

The fertility rate represents the average number of children expected to be born per woman during her lifetime based on current fertility patterns.

07 Median Age

Median age is the age that divides a population into two equal groups: half of the population is younger and half is older.

08 Urban Population

Urban Population % shows the share of people living in areas classified as urban.

09 World Share

World Share represents the percentage of the world's total population living in a particular country.

Population Data Sources and Methodology

Population figures on CountryStats.info are based primarily on data from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division – World Population Prospects 2024 Revision.

The UN World Population Prospects provides population estimates and projections for 237 countries and areas, using information from population censuses, vital registration systems, demographic surveys, and other official statistical sources.

For the 2024 revision, the United Nations incorporated information from 1,910 national population censuses conducted between 1950 and 2023, together with vital registration data and thousands of nationally representative surveys.

Population projections account for major demographic components including:

Fertility
Mortality
International Migration
Population Age Structure
Historical Trends

Because populations are constantly changing, figures for 2026 should be understood as estimates rather than exact real-time counts.

What is the most populated country in 2026?

India is the most populated country in the world in 2026, with an estimated population of about 1.477 billion people.

What is the second-most populated country?

China ranks second with approximately 1.413 billion people in 2026.

What is the third-most populated country?

Which continent has the largest population?

Asia has the largest population, with approximately 4.86 billion people in 2026 and around 58.6% of the world's population.

Which major countries are losing population?

Among the world's largest countries, China, Russia, and Japan have negative annual population growth estimates for 2026.

How are country population figures calculated?

Population estimates are developed using census data, birth and death records, surveys, migration statistics, and demographic models. For future years, the United Nations uses assumptions and statistical models covering fertility, mortality, migration, age, and sex.

Are 2026 population figures exact?

No. Population numbers constantly change because of births, deaths, and migration. Annual country population figures are therefore estimates or projections based on the best available demographic data.
